Netflix on Shameless

Zaz, I feel like a book or TV show is made infinitely better when there's a female lead who refuses to behave properly. Yeah, it's our favourite kind of character. I just know our listeners are going to fall in love with Sibylla Melvin in My Brilliant Career, which launched on Netflix this week. And we've been waiting for this one. The series is based on the iconic and super progressive novel by Miles Franklin back in 1901, which was very empowering, feminist and racy for its time. It is not a stuffy period drama. Sibylla is also funny, impulsive, ambitious and a little messy. The sort of character we all recognise and root for. She kind of feels like someone we'd know in 2026, but she's living in rural Australia at the turn of the century. Which is why her family is keen to marry her off, but Sibylla is not like the other girls. She dreams of being a writer and living life on her own terms. Entirely. Let's not skim over the bushwees, barn dancing and love triangles. See, this is what I love about it though. In true Sibylla fashion, it's not really about which man she'll choose, but whether she'll choose love at all.
