According to incredible research from Deakin Uni, it turns out our early relationships, including our teenage besties and parents, can completely influence our adult ones. Associate Professor Jackie McDonald helped lead this research and she joins me right now. Jackie, one of the things that really surprised me was the link between early relationship quality and mental health during the transition to parenthood. Why do those teenage relationships still matter decades later? Becoming a parent is one of the biggest transitions we go through. It's joyful, but it's also demanding and it can be quite destabilising. But what we find is that the emotional resources people draw on at that moment were being built long before. And two things seem to matter. The first is mental health among new mums and dads who experienced real psychological distress in the first year. More than eight in ten had already shown signs of similar struggles back in their teens or twenties. So for most, it doesn't come out of nowhere with the baby. The signs are usually there much earlier. And the second is the relationship themselves. Learning early on that you can trust people, building the networks who will be there for you, and leaning on them gives you something to draw on when you're suddenly responsible for a newborn. So our research provides good evidence that supporting young people's mental health and their relationships isn't only good for them at the time, it's also an investment in how they'll cope and bond as parents years later. Adolescence is often painted as this awkward phase we just have to survive before real life and our real relationships begin. Deakin University has produced research that suggests we were right all along. Our teenage relationships with friends and our parents actually do us the world of good. Associate Professor Jackie MacDonald from Deakin Uni helped lead this research. I'm here right now with Jackie and Jackie, most of us understand that the way we're parented influences our relationships with a partner and our own kids. But it's wild to think that these patterns travel much further than any of us ever realised. Why is that? You know, most of us already have a sense of this, that who we become as a parent doesn't actually just begin at birth. It has a long history behind it. And what we see is that caring for a child draws on capacities we start building much earlier. Things like empathy, a sense of identity, and the ability to be close to someone and read what they need. So in a real sense, what a parent brings to their baby was being assembled years before the baby arrived. And we can see that in the data. The young people in our research who had the strongest relational connections, even before they were even thinking about having children, went on to form the warmest bonds with their own babies. That's so nice to hear. If you'd like to learn more about this incredibly important research, head to deakin.edu.au forward slash inherited. And a huge thank you to Deakin Uni for making this episode of Inherited possible.

Your ritual you told our producers is wearing one of your dad's shirts for good luck and you were wearing these on Dancing with the Stars last year. Yes, yes, so this was very cool, like one of the most out of body experiences and out of my element experiences I've ever had. Well, definitely the most out of my element was when I did Dancing with the Stars. I had no idea what I was doing really because you are incredible at dancing. Like, oh my god, I really have grown to love it. It's become a part of my life that I really have embraced and I really enjoy, but I was not a dancer. And so I didn't know what I was doing and I was living in LA for three months. My family came out which was so valuable and that made all the difference. They moved out to LA with me, but I also needed a piece of home. So I went into my dad's office and I dusted off like one of his old shirts and it was raggedy with holes in it. I got it all patched up and I think each missing button and hole kind of told a story, each rip and tear, but I put it all back together and I would wear it every day. We would do all the rehearsals all week and then right before the show you would do like a blocking, right? So it's like a full sort of dress rehearsal and you're sort of supposed to wear your costume of whatever you were wearing that week. But I said respectfully, I'd like to wear my dad's shirt every time I do it.

If you had a difficult time with your parents growing up you might assume this will impact all of your adult relationships from your romantic partnerships right through to the bond you have with your kids. We're almost taught that the damage is done and what will be will be but Associate Professor Jackie McDonald and researchers from Deakin University have discovered that it's a lot more nuanced and hopeful. Jackie has joined me to chat it through and your research suggests, Jackie, that when we're teenagers building those strong foundations for future relationships, our friends actually matter more than we might think. Yes, we put so much weight on parents that we forget how much our friends are teaching us. Friendships are a different kind of relationships. They're more equal, more of a negotiation, where we practice things like trust, reading other people and working through conflict. So in our research across two countries, teenagers with good friendships tended to have healthier romantic relationships later. And it was strongest when they had strong bonds with both their friends and their parents. But here's the hopeful part. A good friendship may offer some of the security that a young person might not always get at home. So if things were hard with your parents, that's not the end of the story. A trusted friend can be part of what helps you build strong foundations for future relationships. If you're keen to learn more about the research, head to deakin.edu.au forward slash inherited.
